Thornburg worked at [Xerox Palo Alto Research Center](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PARC_(company)) as a research scientist, on a variety of projects, including the development of user interface devices for the [Xerox Alto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xerox_Alto). His inventions included touch screen technology used in early PDAs and whiteboards.

He co-founded Koala Technologies, which marketed one of his inventions, the [KoalaPad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KoalaPad) graphics tablet.
