Here is a simple sketch on how you can provide battery backup for your computer. Cost of parts is small, the 2N5193 can be replaced by almost any 3 to 4 amp PNP transistor. Also included is a short routine illustrating the usefullness of the CODE function in devising a “goof-proof” data entry method. As written, it will accept ONLY positive numbers from 0.0 to 99.9. It will NOT ACCEPT (a) negative numbers, (b) a space (CODE=0), (c) numbers without a decimal point (it will accept a decimal point as a zero entry), (d) any other character than a number or a decimal point or an X, (e) numbers greater than 99.9. The routine is exited by entering an X. You can, of course modify it to suit your needs. Station applications might include logging. calculating satellite orbits from data with a large number of decimal places, etc. It won’t keep you from typing in a ‘wrong data’ entry due to your faulty reading/typing, but it does narrow down the range possible errors!
