Thornburg worked at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center as a research scientist, on a variety of projects, including the development of user interface devices for the Xerox Alto. His inventions included touch screen technology used in early PDAs and whiteboards.
He co-founded Koala Technologies, which marketed one of his inventions, the KoalaPad graphics tablet.

Digitizing tablet originally designed for the ZX80. User would have been able to write on the table and have the output appear as characters or draw on the tablet and output as graphics on the screen. The tablet was eventually available for Atari computers.
