Death Castle is a multi-part text adventure game in which the player guides Marcus, a young adventurer, through a dangerous castle to defeat the evil ruler Hombinus. The game is distributed across five separate tape-loaded programs: an introduction, a picture loader, Part 1, a DC-2 loader/intro, and Part 2. Part 1 uses flag variables (s, sh, g, m) to track acquired items — a sword, shield, gold, and medallion — and presents context-sensitive choices based on their combinations using chains of IF statements. Part 2 extends gameplay with a two-word command parser that accepts verb-noun pairs typed in CAPS, checking string variables against a vocabulary list for each room. Both parts use ON ERR CONTINUE and ON ERR GO TO for error trapping, and POKE 23659 to control the CAPS LOCK state programmatically.


Program Analysis

Program Structure

The game is delivered as five separate programs loaded sequentially from tape:

  1. Castle — Introduction narrative and setup, ends with LOAD "Pl"
  2. Picture loader — Loads a SCREEN$ image then chains to LOAD "DC"
  3. Death Castle (Part 1) — Main adventure, lines 1–9100, ends with LOAD "dcl"
  4. DC-2 loader — Two-word command tutorial, ends with LOAD "Castle 2"
  5. DC part 2 (Castle 2) — Extended adventure with parser, lines 1–9999

Each module hands off to the next via a LOAD statement, forming a tape-chained pipeline. The player is instructed to start and stop the tape at appropriate moments, with FLASH 1 prompts (“START TAPE”, “STOP THE TAPE”) serving as cues.

State Tracking in Part 1

Part 1 tracks the player’s inventory using four integer flags initialized at line 50:

Every branching decision — combat outcomes, NPC dialogue, available choices — is gated by combinations of these flags via chains of IF s=1 AND sh=1 THEN ... constructs. For example, lines 712–719 dispatch the serpent encounter to eight different handlers depending on all three of s, sh, and g.

Two-Word Command Parser in Part 2

Part 2 introduces a simple hand-coded parser. The player inputs a string into z$ (or Z$ — the code mixes case) and it is compared against a fixed vocabulary of verb-noun pairs using sequential IF z$="VERB NOUN" THEN ... lines. There is no tokenization or splitting; the entire input must match a hardcoded string exactly. Accepted verbs include KILL, ATTACK, DESTROY, READ, GET, GO, GIVE, SMELL, PICK, SHOOT, THROW, and cardinal directions (N/S/E/W). A fallback GO TO at the end of each room’s handler (e.g., line 399 GO TO 310) loops back to accept new input.

The parser is case-sensitive and the player is repeatedly reminded to use CAPS LOCK. Misspelled or unknown commands are silently ignored by falling through all the IF tests and looping. This is noted at line 140 in the DC-2 loader: “it will just display the cursor again.”

POKE 23659 Usage

The picture loader and Part 1 both use POKE 23659,21 followed immediately by POKE 23659,0. Address 23659 is the CAPS LOCK flag in the system variables. Poking 21 sets CAPS LOCK on; poking 0 clears it. This pair appears just before LOAD statements, suggesting it is used to ensure a known keyboard state before loading the next program segment rather than to enable or disable CAPS LOCK for user input.

Timing Minigames

Two reaction-based minigames appear in the game. In Part 1 (line 556 onward), the player must press q during the OPEN phase of a spiked door cycle. The speed variable a is set at lines 557–564 based on inventory weight (ranging from 10 for full loadout down to 70 for nothing carried), and a FOR f=1 TO a loop polls INKEY$ on each iteration. In Part 2 (lines 9215–9229 and 9750–9787), similar timed reaction loops gate the final boss battle, using short FOR f=0 TO 3 and FOR f=0 TO 2 loops that alternate between BLOCKED/NOT BLOCKED and BARRIER THERE/BARRIER GONE states.

Error Trapping

Both Part 1 and Part 2 open with the same error-handling pattern:

  • ON ERR RESET — resets error state
  • ON ERR CONTINUE — continue after an error
  • ON ERR GO TO 70 (or GO TO 3 in the intro) — loop back to CONTINUE

This effectively suppresses all runtime errors, allowing the program to survive unexpected keypresses or edge cases without crashing to BASIC.

String Puzzle

Lines 781–782 and 983–984 present a pig-Latin cipher: "essedblay areway ethay oyallay ollowersfay ofway alorkay." The player must decode this to "Blessed are the loyal followers of Kalor" and type it exactly (line 987 accepts with or without a trailing period) to win Part 1. This is the sole text-input puzzle in an otherwise menu-driven game.

Notable Techniques and Idioms

  • Death is uniformly handled by printing “THE END” followed by INPUT a$: RUN, restarting the entire program from the top — there is no save state.
  • Part 2 uses GO TO 9999 as a universal death handler: line 9999 prints “THE END”, then INPUT a$: RUN.
  • The variable b$ is constructed at lines 504–508 to insert context-sensitive weapon text mid-sentence at line 509, demonstrating basic string interpolation via concatenation with the semicolon operator.
  • The intro program uses a FOR f=1 TO 500: NEXT f busy-wait delay loop (lines 12 and 536) as a timing mechanism before tape operations.
  • Part 2 line 151 includes PRINT AT 15,31;"k";AT 10,23;"e" mid-paragraph, placing stray characters on screen — likely a typographical error.
  • Line 6000 is targeted by GO TO 6000 (e.g., line 357) but the actual room description code begins at line 6005; line 6000 is missing, so the jump falls through to 6005 — a valid technique in Sinclair BASIC where a GO TO to a non-existent line runs the next higher line.
  • Case inconsistency in Part 2’s parser (e.g., Z$ vs z$ at lines 816, 835) means some inputs typed in capitals would fail to match — a latent bug given that the player is instructed to use CAPS LOCK.
