In the December 93 issue of IQLR (vol. 3 issue 4) Bill Cable describes a group of programs for building a word index of a text file using the facilities of Archive. As I have never had occasion to use Archive I found it quite instructive to take a look at the code (together with the odd glance at the relevant section of the QL User Guide). However, my attention was attracted particularly by the comment in Step 4 that “it may take several hours … to index large text files”. As similar functionality can be provided easily in GT-Prolog I thought it might be interesting to make a comparison.
