BOSTON, MA – Sinclair Research has increased monthly production of its ZX81 microcomputer to 40,000 units from 20,000. The British-based company now produces more personal computers than any other manufacturer, including United States market leaders Tandy Corporation and Apple Computer.

The ZX81, which at $149.95 is the lowest priced personal computer on the market, was announced in the United States and Japan last month.

Already interest from the announcement has generated 5000 orders that have actually been processed, according to Nigel Searle, director of the company’s office here.

Sinclair Research sold over 100,000 of its first model, the ZX80, and the company expects the sales rate for the ZX81 to be “three or four times greater,” Searle said.

The ZX81 is sold by mail order in the United States. In Great Britain it can be bought at a chain of retail stationery stores.
